At the June 25 meeting Manager Stinnett gave the board a sequence of operational updates and near-term event logistics for Canton.
Manager Stinnett presented the monthly tax report and asked permission to remove several Bradford pear trees near the original Champion Credit Union on Academy Street and replace them with dogwoods; the board gave consensus to proceed. "There are Bradford pear trees around the original Champion Credit Union on Academy Street that are in need of repair and would like permission to remove them and replace them with Dogwood trees," Manager Stinnett said.
He said crews will replace insert valves on two major water lines next week — one serving the old Town Hall and another on Champion Drive — and that staff do not anticipate interruptions to water service while the work is done. The manager also said the old fire department building is scheduled for demolition beginning July 6, 2026, and recommended closing Adams Street near Champion Credit Union during demolition for public safety; he said fencing will be erected around that site and around the Armory once contractors secure permits.
Manager Stinnett reminded the board of the employee picnic on July 3, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with awards at noon, and confirmed the county has approved the town's fireworks display for the July 4th Plus One celebration. He also said the Lion’s Club will not bring a carnival this year because of staffing and scheduling issues but hopes to return next year. Alderwoman Proctor and others noted positive public response to the pool, pickleball courts and Chestnut Mountain as summer activities picked up.
Chief Sluder addressed a social-media report of a car crash earlier in the day and said it was "a two-car accident, both cars going in the same direction and there were no injuries." The board discussed public-safety measures and planning tied to construction and town events as part of these updates.
The board set the next meeting for July 9, 2026.
