Board approves $7.44M bill list, JCP&L contracts, special‑education placements and personnel actions

The New Providence Board of Education took a series of routine fiscal, facilities, education and personnel votes at its Jan. 23 meeting.
Finance and donations: The board accepted the December 2024 Board Secretary and Treasurer reports and approved payment of January 2025 bills totaling $7,439,337.25. The Board also accepted a $2,500 donation from the Drive for Autism Foundation for sensory pathways and classroom cool‑down areas at Salt Brook School.
Facilities contracts: The Board approved three agreements with Jersey Central Power & Light (pursuant to 18A:18A‑5) for electric distribution facilities work: Allen W. Roberts $40,933.44; Salt Brook $47,362.36; New Providence High/Middle School $48,720.49 (combined total approximately $137,016.29). These were approved on roll call.
Education actions and contracts: The Board approved Superintendent recommendations on Harassment/Intimidation/Bullying investigations (Middle School incident report #3; Salt Brook reports #1 and #2), the Uniform State Memorandum of Agreement Between Education and Law Enforcement Officials for 2024/25, and adoption of the Biology Now (Honors Biology, 9th grade) textbook. The Board also approved two out‑of‑district enrollments with tuition rates: Student #11203 at East Mountain School, tuition $54,500, effective Jan. 2, 2025; Student #11224 at MUJC Developmental Learning Center, tuition $108,792, effective Jan. 2, 2025. The Board approved Morris Union Jointure Commission special‑education related service rates (adaptive PE $201/hr; OT $206/hr; PT $227/hr; speech/language $242/hr). The Board approved a LinkIt! pilot Memorandum of Understanding to run Jan.–June 2025 with included professional development.
Personnel and policy: The Board approved multiple staff appointments (including maintenance/HVAC appointment of Louis Debski), ESSA Title I assignments, substitute and long‑term substitute appointments, unpaid family leave requests (paternity and maternity), an extended unpaid child‑rearing leave, and accepted the resignation/retirement notice of Salt Brook Principal Jean Drexinger effective July 31, 2025. The Board also approved first readings of several policy updates (Policy 2260, 2411, 3418, 5750 and Regulation 2260).
How the votes went: The motions were carried on roll call for each grouped set of items; where roll calls were recorded the minutes show unanimous yea votes on the action items listed (except the minutes approval earlier in the meeting which carried with one abstention).
