At its Dec. 12 meeting, the New Providence Board of Education approved a slate of personnel actions covering appointments, resignations, revisions and leaves for the 2024–25 school year.
The board approved numerous appointments that included long-term substitutes, advisors and instructional staff (examples listed in the agenda include Karen Gaeta as a long-term substitute teacher effective Feb. 1, 2025; Ji Hwan Ryu as teacher effective Jan. 27, 2025; Rachel Curcio as reading specialist effective Feb. 18, 2025; and a variety of coach and advisor stipends). The full list of appointments was presented and approved as part of the personnel consent agenda.
The board accepted the resignation of Maria Halkias, reading specialist, effective Jan. 10, 2025. It also approved unpaid maternity leave requests: Dana Branstetter (teacher), twelve weeks under the state Family Leave Act beginning March 21, 2025 (dates subject to adjustment by birth), and Nina Kania (occupational therapist), six weeks under federal FMLA beginning Feb. 24, 2025 followed by twelve weeks under the state FLA beginning Apr. 23, 2025, with continued health insurance benefits pursuant to law.
Rebecca Coniglio moved the personnel items; Jennifer Killea seconded and the motion carried on roll call. After the vote Superintendent Dr. Lauren Zirpoli introduced new employees to the board. Departing board members were thanked in committee reports and during remarks; board member Jennifer Killea reflected on her service and said she was grateful for the opportunity to serve.
