New Providence Board of Education holds special retreat, moves into closed session

Board President Bernadette Cuccaro called the New Providence Board of Education to order at 3:21 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2024, at the New Providence High School/Middle School media center for a special retreat meeting. Present on the initial roll call were Board members Rebecca Coniglio, Bernadette Cuccaro, Dr. Kristen Empson Hayden, Stacey Gunderman, Jennifer Killea, Amanda Marano and Joe Walsh; Superintendent Dr. Lauren Zirpoli and School Business Administrator/Board Secretary James Testa were also in attendance.
Cuccaro read the statutory notice that the meeting was a special session held in accordance with PL 1975, Chapter 231 and read a posted notice dated Aug. 30, 2024, stating the Board would move immediately into closed session for a board retreat. She opened the public-comment period at 3:32 p.m.; no members of the public spoke, and the public portion closed at 3:32 p.m.
Board member Joe Walsh moved to adopt a resolution authorizing the Board to discuss specified matters in closed session on Oct. 2, 2024, “pursuant to Section 7 of the Open Meetings Act”; Amanda Marano seconded the motion, which the minutes record as carried unanimously. The stated purpose of the closed session was a Board Retreat. The minutes note that the closed-session discussion may be disclosed to the public only after a final determination of action has been reached.
The Board reconvened in public at 6:02 p.m., with Board President Bernadette Cuccaro calling the meeting back to order. With no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Joe Walsh, seconded by Amanda Marano, and the meeting was adjourned at 6:03 p.m. The minutes are marked as unapproved and subject to change.
