Two public commenters used the July 7 meeting's public-comment period to press city leaders on different issues: concern about federal immigration enforcement and an appeal over senior-center access.
Andy Yu told council a report described a sharp increase in ICE detentions and deportations and urged residents to connect with rapid-response groups and local patrols. "We cannot let this be the new normal," Yu said, urging community organization and protection for neighbors.
Later, Cynthia Clemente, who identified herself as a disabled Norwalk senior, said the Norwalk Senior Center fitness room schedule effectively reserves the main area for ping-pong players and leaves little usable space for other seniors. "That fitness room should be for all seniors," Clemente said, asking the council to intervene so residents with mobility issues can access equipment and space for stretching and exercise.
Mayor Perez asked staff to follow up on Clemente's complaint and requested a report back to council. No formal action or vote was taken on either public comment during the meeting.
