North Bergen Board approves hires, stipends, grants and construction change order

At its Feb. 19 meeting the North Bergen Board approved numerous personnel hires and stipends, accepted a $50,000 Hudson County juvenile community service grant, authorized a $49,396.30 construction change order, set the school election for April 15 and approved multiple budget and policy items.
The North Bergen Board of Education at its Feb. 19 meeting approved a broad slate of routine and financial measures, including personnel appointments, stipends and a construction change order.
Personnel and stipends: The board confirmed multiple hires and appointments, including Adamarys Galvin as Principal of the North Bergen Junior High School (effective July 1, 2025), substitute teachers and one-on-one aides for the 2024–2025 school year, a maintenance aide at $19.43/hour and extracurricular coaches and stipends for spring sports. The board also approved summer-school appointments (Scott Miller, director, $8,250; listed assistant directors), salary differentials for professional staff based on continuing-education achievements, and a $3,000 self-care stipend for selected ACES and nurse/clerical aides. All personnel motions carried by unanimous vote of members present.
Grant and programs: The board accepted a $50,000 Hudson County Juvenile Community Service Project grant for Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2025, with program payroll and consultant allocations specified in the resolution (e.g., $12,000 for program director). The board approved assignments for 2025 Bilingual/ESL ACCESS and STEM/STEAM testing personnel and authorized after-school and writing-tutoring programs funded in part by Title I SIA funds.
Contracts and finance: Resolution No. 46 authorized Change Order No. 051 with ALNA Construction for additional work and credits totaling $49,396.30 to be taken from the project contingency (no change to the total contract amount), leaving $574,689.98 in contingency. The board also received and filed the Treasurer’s and Secretary’s financial reports for January 2025, approved budgetary transfers and ratified warrants and payments.
Elections, policies and other items: The board set the Annual School Board Election date for April 15, 2025 and a petition filing deadline of Feb. 24, 2025. It adopted a job description for a Director of Special Projects, approved revisions to several policies and updated the meeting schedule to add March 6, 2025. The board also approved sidebar agreements with the Council of Administrators and Supervisors and with the North Bergen Federation of Teachers pertaining to non-pensionable stipends at the Career Academy.
Superintendent updates and next steps: Superintendent Dr. George J. Solter Jr. briefed the board that county code assignment and busing for the new junior high are being arranged and that tours will be scheduled for school stakeholders. Assistant Superintendent Steve Somick said bidding for the McKinley School roof and busing services for the junior high will open next month.
All listed motions were recorded as approved by the board members present. The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
