New Hanover to seek CDBG funds for ADA-accessible playground at Nash Park

At its Jan. 6 meeting, the New Hanover Township Committee agreed to apply for FY2026 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to make the Nash Park playground ADA-compliant.
Deputy Mayor Nicholas Pawlyzyn opened the public hearing on the CDBG grant. Township Clerk Susan Jackson explained the types of projects eligible under the grant program and said municipal parking-lot lighting would not qualify as a CDBG-eligible safety item: "that is not allowable because that is more of a safety issue," Jackson said, and she added she would contact PSE&G to inspect the lot light. Committee and a member of the public also discussed playground padding and whether new equipment would damage newly installed padding; a committee response stated installation of new equipment would not harm the padding.
The committee decided to pursue the CDBG application for ADA-compliant playground equipment and subsequently approved Resolution 2026-35, "Authorizing Submission of an Application for FY2026 Community Development Block Grant Funding for Accessibility Improvements to the Playground at Nash Park," on the consent agenda.
The decision begins the grant-application process; any award would still require compliance with CDBG program rules and a subsequent contract or approval before equipment installation.
