Paul Peterla elected New Hanover mayor; Pawlyzyn chosen deputy mayor

At a Jan. 6 reorganization meeting, the New Hanover Township Committee elected Committeeman Paul Peterla as mayor and Committeeman Nicholas Pawlyzyn as deputy mayor.
Pawlyzyn nominated Peterla for mayor and Committeeman Rick Koshak seconded the motion; the clerk recorded a 5-0 roll-call vote to appoint Peterla. Peterla was sworn in by Township Attorney Mark Roselli and the meeting was turned over to him. For deputy mayor, Koshak moved to appoint Pawlyzyn, Mayor Peterla seconded, and the committee again voted 5-0 to approve; Pawlyzyn was sworn in.
The reorganizational votes immediately preceded the committee’s routine business, including the introduction of Ordinance 2026-01, “An Ordinance Prescribing and Providing for the Employment and Compensation of the Officials and Employees of the Township of New Hanover.” Mayor Peterla read the ordinance by title and Committeeman Patrick Murphy moved to set a public hearing on the ordinance for Feb. 10, 2026; Committeeman Aaron Smith seconded the motion, and the committee voted 5-0 to schedule the hearing.
The new leadership and the ordinance introduction are standard annual reorganization actions that establish committee officers for the year and begin the process for updating personnel compensation regulations. No debate over the ordinance’s substance was recorded; the public hearing was scheduled to allow further comment before any final vote.
The committee adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
