The North Bergen Board of Education on March 19 approved a slate of personnel actions including new hires, stipends and leave requests across district schools.
Appointments approved included a substitute teacher (Juan Jayo); full‑time custodians Andrew Gelpi (McKinley), Freddy Castillo (Kennedy) and Carmen Paulino (Kennedy); clerk Jennifer Paulino for the NBHS CST office; clerical aides Hilda Hanna (Robert Fulton) and Daysi Chavez (North Bergen Junior High); and ACES aide Olga Palma for the Early Childhood ACES program. Many appointments were noted as provisional pending required certification, physicals and background clearances.
The board also approved after‑school portfolio assessment stipends of $75 per hour for specified high school teachers for January 2025 (individual hours and amounts listed in board documents), and awarded Myriam Fiallos a $5,990 stipend as Bilingual/ESL Testing Coordinator for 2024–2025. Resolution No. 11 established a $3,000 self‑care stipend (paid $300 monthly) for certain ACES aides, one‑on‑one aides and nurse/clerical aides performing additional duties.
Leaves of absence approved included a New Jersey Family Leave (without pay) for teacher Jorge Reyes from May 1 through June 30, 2025; FMLA (paid with sick days) and extended sick leave for Debra Cappiello‑Perez from April 1 through May 30, 2025 (with the FMLA portion April 1–May 13); and an earlier FMLA period for Michelle Marin covering Jan. 29–Mar. 16, 2025. The board also accepted resignations effective May 5, 2025 (Samerh Khalil) and May 17, 2025 (Diana Santos).
Motions to approve these items were made and seconded by board members and carried with the ayes recorded. Board packets list effective dates, step/salary information where applicable, and indicate required pre‑employment checks are outstanding for provisional appointments.
