Board approves change orders and emergency plumbing contract for NBHS West project
Summary

The North Bergen Board of Education on Jan. 15 approved Change Order No. 049 and No. 050 for the North Bergen High School West (NBHSW) renovation and awarded an emergency plumbing contract for repair work at John F. Kennedy Elementary School.
Change Order No. 049, approved without change to the overall contract price, deletes Extra Work Order (EWO) #219 (a net deduction of $477,330.00) while adding multiple extra work items including NFPA 286 fire-rated material, clean fill for contaminated soil removal, time-and-materials ceiling repairs, a 60" manhole riser, and replacement of damaged ceiling tiles. The net effect set by the board was a deduction of $242,467.79 from identified items, restructuring Contract Allowance No. 10 to $0.00 and increasing the project contingency to $650,120.61. The motion was made by Luis Diaz and seconded by Haissam Jaafar and carried unanimously.
The board also approved Change Order No. 050, adding $26,034.33 for three additional items: relocating the new water meter in the field house, repairing a below-grade waterline damaged during play-field work, and concrete cutting/replacement to access below-slab installations. Those costs were taken from the project contingency, reducing it to $624,086.28; the vote was unanimous.
Separately, under emergency provisions, the board awarded a contract to Guarini Plumbing, Inc. to perform emergency pipe replacement at John F. Kennedy Elementary School for $44,592.36 after a pipe burst occurred over the December holiday break and was located with the water company. That award was approved by unanimous vote.
Board minutes identify ALNA Construction (low bidder on NBHSW) as the prime contractor for the renovations; the change orders adjust internal allowances and contingency balances but do not change the total contract amount. The motion language and supporting EWO numbers were entered into the record during the Jan. 15 meeting.
The board took the actions as part of routine meeting business; no public debate or opposing votes were recorded in the minutes. The next public record of project accounting will be reflected in future board reports and the posted change order documents.
