The Board of Mayor and Aldermen authorized two Utility Department actions at its May 14 meeting: an upgrade to the automatic meter reading (AMR) system and an emergency repair for a high-pressure gas valve on Mill Street.
Utility Director Darryl Green told the board that the AMR system installed in 2019 requires replacement and ongoing upgrades. The minutes record the approved purchase from United Systems with the purchase amount entered in the motion as $64,479.26 and the annual maintenance fee listed as $14,294.26 (an earlier line in the minutes listed $64,474.26; that discrepancy is recorded in clarifying details). Ald. Donna R. Butler moved to approve the purchase and Ald. Keith Smith seconded; the motion carried.
On a separate item, Green reported that the annual leak survey found a leak on a critical valve on Mill Street. The board approved an estimated $46,180 repair; Ald. Keith Smith moved to approve the repair costs and Ald. Buel Maness seconded the motion, which carried.
Why it matters: The AMR upgrade is intended to modernize metering infrastructure but will increase upfront and maintenance costs for the Utility Department; the valve repair addresses a leak on a critical line and is necessary to maintain safe and reliable utility service.
Implementation: The Utility Department was directed to execute the purchase order and schedule installation for the AMR upgrade and to schedule the valve repair and confirm a contractor. Utility Director Darryl Green will report back on timelines.
