Committee approves CCTV inspection after 9106 Madge sewer backup tied to 99-year-old lateral
Summary
After a sewer backup at 9106 Madge linked to a 99-year-old clay lateral that runs atypically toward a high-school trunk line, the committee approved a CCTV inspection (~$300) to establish a benchmark and determine whether tying into the street main is needed.

Public works representative Dan told the committee a sewer backup at 9106 Madge stemmed from a failure near the driveway apron on a clay lateral likely installed in 1927. Dan described an unusual lateral route that travels parallel to the tree lawn and connects to an MSD-owned trunk line at the high school, and noted root intrusion from a city-owned tree could have contributed to the obstruction.
The options presented were to leave the lateral as repaired and perform periodic cabling/inspection, or to pay roughly $6,500 to tie the lateral into the street main. Committee members recommended a video inspection first to establish a benchmark and identify defects; Dan estimated a CCTV run at about $300. A motion to proceed with a video inspection was seconded and approved by committee voice vote.
Dan said the CCTV footage would inform whether a tie-in is necessary and that if video shows defects staff would return with a recommendation for corrective action. He also noted MSD’s position: if the lateral is not broken they are unlikely to re-tap or provide a free connection to the main.
