Elberta to review draft Consumers Energy electric franchise ordinance in September

Council President Jennifer Wilkins told the Aug. 15 meeting that Consumers Energy notified the village its electric franchise will expire on Dec. 8, 2024 and requested that the village renew the franchise by ordinance.
Wilkins said the franchise allows Consumers Energy to provide electric service to village residents and businesses and that the contract term is 30 years. The council voted to review the draft ordinance at the Sept. regular council meeting; no ordinance text was adopted at the Aug. 15 session.
Council members did not debate terms or cite proposed changes during the meeting; the action taken was to place the draft franchise ordinance on the September agenda for discussion and potential ordinance drafting or introduction.
Next steps: the council will review the draft ordinance at its September meeting and determine whether to introduce a proposed ordinance for first reading.
