Edmore council votes to terminate Montcalm County Sheriff's Office contract effective March 31

The Village of Edmore council voted to terminate its police protection contract with the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office effective March 31, 2025. The motion was made by Councilmember Griswold and supported by Councilmember Kanine; a roll-call vote recorded yes from Colburn, Griswold, Kanine and President Chet Guild and noted McParland, Moore and Pierce as absent.
The council's action followed notice from the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office that it was no longer able to fulfill the existing police protection contract as written. Members discussed whether to continue service and payments or to release the contract early; the council chose the latter and approved termination at the special meeting called March 19.
Griswold moved the termination motion and Kanine supported it. The meeting minutes record no public comments on the item and no amendment to the motion. The termination motion was recorded as passed with four votes in favor and three members absent.
The village did not record an immediate replacement plan for police services in the minutes. The council adjourned the special meeting at 11:37 a.m.
