Morgan County adopts residential sprinkler rule for WUI areas and large homes

Morgan County commissioners voted unanimously on July 7 to adopt ordinance CO26-13, amending county code 152.05 to require residential fire sprinklers in properties located in the state-mapped wildland-urban-interface (WUI) and for structures that exceed 10,000 square feet in the identified areas.
Staff explained the ordinance adopts the Utah WUI mapping (URAP) and includes the state's minimum International Wildland-Urban Interface provisions. The amendment exempts structures under the 10,000-square-foot threshold in the Weber River bottom plain except where the WUI mapping indicates otherwise; anything over 10,000 square feet in specified zones will require sprinklers under the international code standard cited by staff. Commissioners discussed inspection trails and enforcement: staff said inspectors will verify installation during permitting and final inspection, but private decisions after final inspection (for example, disabling a system) cannot be enforced beyond existing code and insurance practices.
The commission adopted the ordinance after a public hearing, and staff said the change will be incorporated into building-permit requirements and inspections going forward.
