Board approves added resolutions, creates special‑education committee and honors Michigan teachers

The Michigan State Board of Education convened June 9 and approved several agenda additions and ceremonial resolutions, including a request that the Legislature appropriate funding to support monthly statewide board meetings and a new resolution recognizing America's 250th and encouraging civic education.
Board member Miss Schneider moved to amend the agenda to add a resolution asking the Michigan Legislature for appropriations to support travel, meeting operations, accessibility and public participation for statewide monthly meetings during the 2026–27 school year. The amendment passed on a roll call vote after Miss Evans recorded members' responses.
Board President Dr. Pamela Pugh introduced a resolution to establish a special education committee of the State Board to provide a framework and initial convening goals for oversight and coordinated work on special education policy; the board approved the committee.
The board adopted a resolution honoring Dr. Sue C. Carnell upon her planned retirement (effective 07/31/2026), noting her roles as chief of staff, chief deputy superintendent and interim state superintendent during a long career in Michigan education. The roll call for that resolution recorded at least one No vote from a board member but the motion carried.
The board also approved a resolution recognizing Corey Rosser as the 2025–26 Michigan Teacher of the Year and thanked regional honorees. During the meeting, Rosser described his alternative‑education program and emphasized mentorship, community partnerships, and preparing students for careers and postsecondary options. Regional teacher Stephanie Jaskolski urged wider use of teacher‑led "ed camps" as low‑cost, teacher‑run professional development. "Mentorship is really about connecting people to their futures," Jaskolski said.
No formal policy changes were voted on in this block of business; the approved resolutions are ceremonial and advisory. The board recessed for lunch at 12:03 p.m. and planned to reconvene for a 1 p.m. public comment period later in the day.
