Committee backs Growing Water Smart participation; Town sent letter to support EPA Environmental Justice grant

Patagonia’s Sonoita Creek Flood and Flow Study Committee reviewed outreach tied to an EPA Environmental Justice grant request on Aug. 15 and discussed next steps to secure participation in the Growing Water Smart program.
Howard Buchanan, TAS watershed coordinator, said the Sonoran Institute has requested support for the program, which aims to share information about land use, land development and resilient water-use planning across the Colorado watershed basin. Minutes record that the Town Council already sent a letter of support on July 24 to help secure participation by towns like Patagonia.
Buchanan said he is working with Tucson Audubon and other municipal stakeholders to coordinate involvement and to leverage the grant to bring training and planning resources to local leaders. Bill O’Brien, the committee chair and Patagonia town engineer, asked for an action plan from the Flood & Flow committee to lay out next steps for participation and coordination.
No formal direction or vote was taken at the meeting; committee members placed the item on future agendas and requested staff follow-up to produce the requested action plan.
