District reports asbestos in older buildings; mold testing prompts roof and gutter reviews

The Henry County R-I Board of Education record for Sept. 19 notes facility health and safety concerns identified in recent inspections: asbestos was observed in older portions of district buildings, and a mold contractor recommended further roofing and gutter evaluations.
The minutes cite a July 9, 2024 walkthrough by Construction and Abatement Services that verified previously identified asbestos in district facilities. Inspectors observed wrapped pipe insulation and mudded joints in the Elementary School mechanical room and various areas of the original 1961 building. The boiler room in the lower 1952 mechanical area has been sealed and signage posted pending asbestos removal; mudded joints were also observed behind restroom access doors and in overhead ceilings at the high school and were described as being in good condition with no visible damage. Separately, Asbestos Consulting and Testing (ACT) conducted mold testing at the Bus Barn, District Office, and Elementary School (Room 404). ACT recommended evaluating roofing and performing necessary repairs at the Bus Barn, assessing the south-side guttering, and having roofing materials professionally assessed; for Elementary School Room 404 the recommendation was to have the exterior wall and roof evaluated by professionals.
Superintendent Brad Hunter provided these updates as part of administration reports.
