City wins DCNR funding for parks cultural‑resource study; public feedback period underway

Planning staff told the commission the city has secured funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to support a multi‑phased cultural resource study of city parks and that the work may lead to coordinated documentation with the State Historic Preservation Office.
"One of the recommendations that is in that plan was that we conduct a cultural research study for our parks," Matthew said, explaining the study responds to repeated community requests for better historical information about parks and their designs. He said the study would feed into park planning and help ensure that preservation and interpretation inform future improvements.
A planning staff member told commissioners the comprehensive recreation, parks and open space plan (about 160 pages) is in the third week of a 30‑day public comment period and that the comment period closes on July 21. "That public comment period will be finished on July 21," the staff member said, and encouraged commissioners to review the executive summary and the recommendations section or submit feedback via the city website or by emailing staff.
Staff said the cultural resource study is in early scoping and will require further decisions about timeline, contracts and possible multi‑property documentation forms; no contract value or firm was finalized during the meeting.
