The Erie Historic Preservation Commission voted to find reasonable cause that the Erie Municipal Building at 626 State Street qualifies as a city historic landmark and then moved to recommend the nomination to city council.
Matthew, planning staff for the City of Erie, told commissioners the city submitted the building for consideration and framed the structure as an example of mid‑century municipal design and post‑war shifts in local governance. "The Erie Municipal Building, as we sit in it, was brought before us today by the city, for consideration," Matthew said, noting the building is also a contributing structure within the downtown historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Matthew described the building's financing history and civic role, saying the city put up a 1957 bond of about $3,650,000 for the original project and that a redevelopment authority later received a federal grant of about $1,600,000 that made construction feasible. He argued the building reflects a mid‑1950s and 1960s approach that emphasized transparency and accessibility in city government, citing the building’s glass‑front design and the placement of public‑facing departments on the first floor.
Commissioners asked clarification questions about the building’s architect and historical context; Matthew said the firm that designed the municipal building also produced other notable mid‑century works in Erie, including the airport and a local insurance building. After discussion a commissioner moved that the commission "determine there is reasonable cause that the Erie Municipal Building meets the qualifications to become a city of Erie historic landmark as it conveys significance under the criteria A and C and holds sufficient historic integrity." The motion was seconded and carried with no recorded opposition.
The commission then voted to provide a positive recommendation to city council to list the building on Erie’s register of historic places so council can consider the nomination. Matthew said the building was recently recommended to the National Park Service by the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Board, and the city’s listing is intended to ensure local planning around the building remains open and accessible to the public.
The nomination will move to City Council for consideration; the commission did not set additional conditions at the meeting.
