Town Manager Kippton W. Coker updated the council on several operational matters during the Nov. 17 meeting.
On the Madison Avenue sinkhole, Coker said the Town has identified multiple stakeholders and is arranging a meeting with the property owner, the County, the Town attorney and State representatives so each party can bring information to resolve the long-standing problem. He said there is a drainage-improvement grant involved and that work on the upper branch must begin to move the project forward.
On trash services, Coker said the Town has received continued complaints about Republic Servicesa1 collection performance, that the Town has forwarded complaints to Republic, and that citizens are encouraged to contact Republic directly as well. Councilman Hammet requested that all complaints received by Town Hall be formally documented to support any required contractual actions, such as a Right to Cure.
Coker also noted that Chief Marlow issued a press release about an incident at the Food Lion the previous night and that the matter is an ongoing investigation; Coker said limited details were available at the meeting. He reminded residents about upcoming Christmas events, including a Friday-night parade and a Chamber open house on Sunday.
Council members praised the Water Department for recent repair work during nonbusiness hours and reiterated a desire for the Town to publicize the Republic Services phone number for citizen complaints. No formal council actions were taken on these operational updates beyond a directive to document complaints and to pursue the scheduled stakeholder meeting on the sinkhole.
