Henry Co. R‑I board calls April special election to seek $0.50 operating levy increase

Brad Hunter, speaking to the board, recommended the possible special school levy election and explained the ballot question would authorize an increase of $0.5000 per $100 of assessed valuation in the 2025 tax year. Mr. Andy Burkhart made the motion to adopt a resolution calling the election; Dr. Jamie Burkhart seconded. The resolution passed on a 6-0 vote (Ayes: 6; Nays: 0).
Hunter also described an earlier meeting with Sheriff Brown about a potential School Resource Officer for the district and said the Sheriff is requesting that the district contribute one-third of the SRO's annual salary, "which amounts to $20,000." The board did not adopt a separate motion at the Dec. 12 meeting to commit those funds; the levy proposal was presented as the district's financing option to be decided by voters in April.
The ballot question, if approved by voters, would change the district's operating levy going forward; specific budget allocations and any formal commitment to SRO funding would require later board action. The board has scheduled the proposed election for April 8, 2025, and the district will place the resolution and related information on the ballot as authorized by the board vote.
Other routine business at the meeting included approval of the agenda and consent items; the board approved payment of bills totaling $354,358.40 and other financial items.
