During the live demo, the Agency official demonstrated practical steps to find local data on data.census.gov: use the single search bar to reach geographic profiles (example: Prince George's County, Maryland), or open the 'explore filters' panel to select place-level geographies and add topic filters (the presenter used Laurel City and ZCTA 20707 as an example). “Just put in the name of the geography,” the presenter said while finding the Prince George’s County profile.
For subject filters the presenter checked 'race and ethnicity' and showed how results include detailed ACS tables such as B01001B (a detailed table). The presenter noted that table IDs help identify table types (B/A/C = detailed; S = subject). When a table is open, users can trace the source and table metadata and use the site’s download button to export Excel or CSV. The presenter highlighted that the zip download is a flat machine-readable file that includes GUIDs, which analysts often need to match GEOIDs when mapping.
Why it matters: filters and table metadata let users ensure they are working with the correct geography, table type and year; the availability of GUIDs simplifies joins for GIS or programmatic workflows.
The presenter also showed how to select collections of geographies (for example, all census tracts that are fully or partially in Manassas, Virginia) using the 'within other geographies' and selection tools, then refine by survey (ACS) and table type (detailed tables) to limit results to tract-level data suitable for mapping.
