MDOT outlines Center Street East reconstruction; residents ask about sidewalks and driveways

An MDOT representative presented schedules and staging plans for the Center Street East reconstruction project at a special session of the Village of Fairgrove on Feb. 3, 2025. Joe Primeau (MDOT) said the department will try to let the project on either March 7 or April 4, with construction possibly beginning June 2. He described a primary work window through Aug. 8 and a final completion period for tree planting and grading the week of Oct. 1–24. Primeau said heavy-truck traffic will be rerouted to M-138, and crews will attempt to keep at least one lane open to local traffic and maintain driveway access where feasible; work will pause for the July 3–7 holiday period.
The presentation prompted resident questions about sidewalks and private driveways. Council members and staff clarified that crews plan to replace or repair sidewalks only where sidewalks already exist rather than building new sidewalks. Residents with second driveways who want curbs and gutters were asked to email the clerk with photographs and addresses so the request can be considered in final plans.
The plan as described includes temporary detours and local traffic accommodations; the village and MDOT indicated property access would be prioritized where possible but that short-term interruptions are likely during active paving and utility phases. Plans were made available for public review at the village office.
The council did not take formal action on the project at the Feb. 3 meeting; the presentation served to inform residents about schedule options, staging and how to submit driveway/site concerns for consideration before final construction plans are set.
