Sachem administration outlines summer capital work, bus GPS plan and estimates $2.5M–$3.5M per gym for AC

District administrators detailed summer capital projects—piping and ceilings at North, pool mechanical work at East, floor replacements in five elementary schools, parking-lot and electrical work—and described a parent-facing bus GPS geofence system now in use and a future tracking product; officials estimate gym air-conditioning at roughly $2.5–$3.5 million per gym and say such work would need voter approval.
At the July 1 meeting, district administration provided a detailed update on summer capital projects and operations. Staff said two recent graduations went well, summer camps will end an hour earlier on hot days, and several capital projects are underway or planned for the summer months.
Administration reported the district held a capital kickoff and outlined specific projects: replacement of first-floor ceiling piping at North to address repeated leaks and replacement of ceiling materials and lighting; mechanical work at East’s pool while it is drained; electrical-service work at Tecumseh; abatement and replacement of floors in five elementary schools (select classrooms only); and parking-lot work to be funded through the general fund for some sites. The district also said LED fixture replacements are being done as projects occur rather than retrofitting old ballasts.
On gym air-conditioning, administration told trustees that adding AC would be a capital project requiring voter approval and estimated the cost "somewhere around 2 and a half to 3 and a half million dollars per gym." They said, if approved by voters in the May 2027 budget vote, work could be scheduled for the summer of 2028.
Transportation and family communications were also discussed. The district said fall bus routes have been set and described a parent-facing GPS notification feature that uses geofences so parents receive alerts when buses move through designated areas; staff said that feature is not a continuous, high-resolution tracking app. A more robust tracking product is in development with a hoped-for release next spring.
Trustees asked for status updates and for an estimate of the percentage completion for LED conversions; administration said they would provide updated progress information in the Friday packet.
"Anytime we're doing a light project, we're converting to LED," administration said. The board also discussed the safety risks of DIY LED retrofits after hearing about retrofit-related fires in another district; trustees requested that status and progress be included in upcoming reports to the board.
