Trappe Council votes to back Talbot County accommodations tax increase; one abstention
Summary
The Trappe Town Council voted Dec. 4 to send a letter supporting Talbot County’s proposed rise in the accommodations tax from 4% to 6%. The measure passed 4–0 with Commissioner Jeremy Newnam abstaining after a presentation by Cassandra Vanhooser.
Cassandra Vanhooser presented a copy of Talbot County’s accommodation tax code to the Trappe Town Council on Dec. 4 and asked the town to send a letter supporting the county’s proposal to raise the tax from 4% to 6%. She said the county collects the tax and remits towns their share minus a 5% service fee.
After discussion, Commissioner Water Chase moved that Trappe send a letter of support for the increase; Commissioner Rose Potter seconded. The motion passed with four votes in favor and one abstention: Jeremy Newnam recorded as abstaining; Commissioners Michael Sullivan, Rose Potter, Water Chase and President Schmidt voted in favor.
The council did not receive any public comment during the hearing on the measure. The action is limited to sending a letter of support; any final change to the county tax rate would be decided by Talbot County officials.
