Walkersville parks commissioners form subcommittee to study persistent parking and crowding at Heritage Park

The Walkersville Parks Commission agreed to create a three-person subcommittee to evaluate persistent parking congestion at Heritage Park after several members and residents described repeated double-parking, vehicles on grass, and insufficient marked spaces during weekday and weekend youth-sports activity.

Resident and frequent park walker Bob Sussman described recent evenings when every lot was full and urged the commission to begin by marking existing gravel lots so vehicles do not occupy multiple spots. "If you marked spaces so people could pull in, then there's chances that more room could be available," Sussman said.

Commissioners said they want the subcommittee to meet with public-works staff (including Sean and DPW Director Burch) to assess constraints such as water-table/runoff issues and to identify feasible short-term steps (painting lines, designating grass parking) and longer-term options (gravel lots, permeable surfaces, or added lots where feasible). Members suggested the subcommittee document conditions with photos and make a site walkthrough at times of peak use.

Commission members volunteered to serve and agreed the subcommittee should include at least one member available during regular business hours to meet public-works staff; the group asked staff to coordinate meeting times and to report back with findings and recommended next steps. No binding budget commitment was made at the meeting; any construction or paving would require further review and likely public-works approval.
