Homeschool group approved for noncompetitive use of Heritage Farm Parks soccer fields

Lori Keifer, a representative of a group of homeschooling families, asked the Walkersville Parks Commission to approve noncompetitive use of Heritage Farm Parks’ soccer fields on Thursdays from Sept. 19 to Nov. 21 between 2:50 and 4:30 p.m. She told the commission the group had a GVAA signature and had submitted an insurance form and estimated attendance at “about 180, give or take.”
The commission discussed safety concerns raised previously by a commissioner about soccer balls left on the field and traffic near the pavilion; Keifer and other speakers said parents would supervise and retrieve balls when necessary. Keifer also said the group would not operate as a drop-off program and that parents would be present during sessions.
A committee member moved to accept the request; another member seconded. The chair called for the vote and the commission approved the park-use request. The commission did not record a roll-call tally beyond the ordinary “ayes” called in open session.
The group will proceed with the dates and times specified on the application; any outstanding operational issues (for example, field setup or coordination with ongoing league schedules) were left to staff follow-up.
