Veterans ask Lake City for help finding a permanent home for American Legion Post 423

Members of American Legion Post 423 urged the Lake City Council on July 7 to help identify and support a permanent space where veterans can access resources and hold programs.
Rusty Ann Brown, a Navy veteran who described herself as a VA whistleblower and 25-year veteran advocate, said a local post would provide walk-in assistance for benefit claims and other services "people can literally walk in off the street and get information." Mike Ziegler, who introduced the post’s commander Tom Johnson and other members, said the post seeks only an ordinary space—an unused city building, a vacant property or another partnership—so the post can provide ongoing services, mentorship and community support.
Mayor Walker asked City Manager Rosenthal to work with the American Legion to explore options; Rosenthal acknowledged the request and said staff would follow up. Sylvester Warren, a resident who spoke during public comment, also offered a potential location at 341 North Marion Street contingent on the city assisting to make it habitable.
Council did not take formal action on the request during the meeting but directed staff to engage with post representatives and report back.
