Washington Grove HPC weighs archives priorities and potential archivist candidate amid budget review

The Washington Grove Historic Preservation Commission reviewed archives and collections priorities on March 17 and discussed staffing and budget implications for upcoming archival work. Bob Booher, Chair, told members that preservation and storage of records must remain the top priority while improved public accessibility can follow over time. He noted longtime efforts by Pat Patula on camp‑meeting materials and emphasized the need to begin prioritizing post‑1937 municipal records.

Members discussed whether the placeholder archives-worker line in the draft FY budget should be increased to reflect fair‑market compensation and the anticipated hours for archival work. No final budget adjustment was made at the meeting; Chair Booher will refine an archives-budget recommendation for the Town budget process after consulting with Joanna Church, who has expressed interest and whose background the Commission judged to be well suited for initial assessment and transition support. The Commission will circulate Joanna Church’s resume/materials to members and continue defining archival priorities, including transition assistance from Pat Patula.

The draft FY budget retained $5,000 in the special‑projects line for commemorative signage; members agreed that one or two plaques may move forward in the near term and that some related work may be covered in the current budget year. The Chair did not set a final archives allocation but will provide benchmarking and a refined recommendation to inform the Town budget process.
