Lebanon Township’s governing body on Aug. 20 adopted Ordinance No. 08-2025, creating Chapter 215 titled 'Fire Zones' to ensure fire, police and EMS access to water sources and prevent parking or drop‑offs in designated fire zones. The ordinance was adopted unanimously after a short public comment period during which an unnamed resident referenced concerns about fire zones in residential areas.
The ordinance authorizes the Township Committee, after consultation with the Fire Official, Police Chief and Subcode Official, to designate fire zones on public property or private property to which the public is invited when necessary to protect life and property. Property owners are required to erect appropriate signs or painted markings and will be notified in writing by certified mail or personal service. Owners have 30 days to comply and may appeal the designation to the Township Committee within 30 days of receipt of notice.
Violations are punishable by fines of not less than $20 and not more than $100 per day, with each day a separate violation. Enforcement is assigned to members of the Township Police Department and the Township Fire Official. The Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment may also require fire zones for commercial applicants seeking site plan approval where public safety concerns warrant them, and zoning adjustments to parking requirements are permitted if necessary.
Abe Abuchowski moved to adopt Ordinance No. 08-2025; Jay Wojcik seconded. The measure passed 4–0. The ordinance takes effect immediately upon final passage and publication.
