Isanti County parks director reports events, burn schedule, donation and small grant for nesting platforms

Isanti County Parks Director Barry Wendorf reported several program and operations updates at the Parks & Recreation Commission meeting on Feb. 24.
Wendorf said staff led home-school group nature walks at Becklin Park (Feb. 3) and Wayside Park (Feb. 17) and that Winter Trail Day is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Springvale County Park. He also reported two summer events: a Nomadlund Outfitters kayak race planned for Aug. 8, starting at Becklin Park and ending at Cambridge City Park, and the Springvale Showdown Disc Golf Tournament scheduled for Aug. 29.
On operations, the director reported a spring burn schedule that includes 14 burn units across six parks and requested volunteer support throughout the season. He noted that NEO Electrical Solutions donated a memorial bench for Paul Becklin to be placed at Becklin Park, and that the Friends of Anderson Park secured a $500 grant to install five black tern nesting platforms and one loon nest platform. A special-use permit was issued to the Rum River Camera Club to photograph outside regular park hours. The minutes note that park visitor numbers were reported but do not list specific counts.
Separately, the commission approved the January 2026 budget report after a motion by Bob Shogren and a second by Amy Peterson; Peterson asked that the Admin Position be broken out in future reports to clarify the Park Department budget. The commission also approved bills and invoices for February totaling $4,852.95.
The commission adjourned at 5:56 p.m. and confirmed the next meeting for March 24, 2026.
