The Vincennes Historic Review Board on July 7 approved exterior remodeling at 414 North 5th Street, allowing replacement windows, reconstruction of a collapsed porch, siding replacement and installation of a second exterior door that could lead to a future upstairs unit.
The applicant asked the board for permission "to perform some exterior remodeling at the property on, 414 North 5th Street," including replacing "all the windows" and rebuilding the porch where it had collapsed. Board members repeatedly urged that replacements match existing proportions and details. The chair advised that "they can be vinyl windows and everything. They just need to be the same size and the same style," and emphasized retaining corbels, fascia and other architectural features "if at all possible." A member suggested a pitched porch roof instead of a flat roof to avoid water pooling.
The applicant said the plan calls for like‑for‑like double‑hung windows and that the siding color chosen is already on the district's historic palette. The applicant also confirmed the addition of a second door and acknowledged that converting the upstairs to a second dwelling unit would require separate registration/approval.
After discussion of materials and retention of architectural details, Elizabeth moved to approve the application "as presented." Brian seconded the motion and the board voted to approve.
Board members noted staff can guide the applicant on permits and that the Urban Enterprise Zone offers small grants for façade and maintenance work. The applicant was instructed to coordinate final permitting with Brad's office and to return to the board with any substantial changes to the plan.
The board recorded the approval and closed the agenda item with thanks to the applicant.
