Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper to lead six‑year EPA Environmental Justice grant in Great Lakes watershed

Jarrett Steffen of Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper told the North Tonawanda Climate Smart Task Force that his organization will lead an EPA Environmental Justice grant program across the Lake/Erie–Niagara River watershed over the next six years.
Steffen said the initiative will run in two funding rounds; the first round of grants is expected to be announced in spring 2025. He said projects seeking funding will need to tie their work to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative goals, including education, outreach and restoration. Waterkeeper staff are planning listening sessions in October and are seeking volunteers to serve on an outreach committee to shape outreach before the first funding round.
The task force discussed outreach coordination and possible local partners for project proposals. Steffen’s update did not record any formal commitments from the City; he invited interested residents and stakeholders to participate in the October sessions and in the outreach committee that will advise Waterkeeper planning.
