LaPorte County approves USDA grant application for Hunt Lake site assessments

On June 17 the LaPorte County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution allowing the Parks Department to apply for a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) to fund preconstruction work at the former County Highway garage site at Hunt Lake in Rolling Prairie.
Parks Superintendent Jeremy Sobecki said the grant request — $70,000 with a $20,000 local match — is intended to cover environmental site assessment, wetland delineation, water-quality testing, endangered-species review and some site cleanup to prepare the property for potential future development. Attorney Guy DiMartino read "Resolution 2026-2" into the record; Commissioner Haney moved approval by title and Commissioner Holifield seconded. The motion carried 2-0.
Sobecki emphasized the RBDG would fund initial, preconstruction activities only and said it does not make the park open to the public now. The work is intended so the county will be ready to pursue further grants that could fund construction.
