Council approves $128,700 police firearm purchase and $219,900 LED lighting for tennis complex

Item 8C2 authorized the purchase of 150 Walther PDP Pro handguns with optics and holsters from Dana Safety Supply Inc. in the amount of $128,689.82. The police chief told council the purchase would replace the department’s entire inventory with the same 9mm platform and include factory optics; officers will receive training under the department’s existing program. Council members questioned whether the new weapons were the same caliber and how training and inventory replacement would be handled; the chief said the new guns are 9mm and the department has an in-place training plan.
Item 8C5 authorized the purchase of Musco LED sports lights for the Yarbrough Tennis Center in the amount of $219,900. Staff explained the full project is budgeted at $300,000 (to include installation, estimated at roughly $81,000) and that Auburn University will reimburse the city for approximately 85% of the cost under the lease agreement for the tennis facility; that reimbursement will be recorded as a receivable in the general fund. Installation is expected in the October timeframe of the next fiscal year.
Council voted to approve both items (motions carried by voice vote). Staff said most remaining city lighting conversions are complete and that this purchase responds to facility‑specific needs and existing lease terms with the university.
