Gene Zephil, who identified himself as co‑chair of the Keep County Beautiful Board, asked the board during public comment to support installing new "Welcome to Beaufort County" signs at major county entrances and inside the two county airports.
Zephil said the board worked with local students on designs, reduced 13 submitted entries to three, and the county selected a final design. He said the group completed procurement for an initial Route 278 sign and seeks budget in the next fiscal year to place four additional signs at main entrances, including smaller signs for the two county airports.
He acknowledged he does not yet have a firm cost estimate for airport versions and raised the question of whether the airports' enterprise funds or county funds would cover installation and maintenance. "I don't have a number for you right now in terms of what it will cost," he said.
Chair asked staff to arrange a follow‑up meeting with Zephil and the deputy director to discuss placement and funding; Zephil agreed to provide contact information for follow‑up.
The board did not take formal action on the proposal at the meeting; staff said they would coordinate with airport management and report back.
