Shenendehowa board elects Naomi Hoffman president, Carla Thompson vice president

Naomi Hoffman was elected president of the SHENENDEHOWA CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Board of Education at the board’s July meeting after a formal nomination and vote. The board carried the motion to install Hoffman as president; the board then administered the oath of office.

Hoffman, who said she has served on the board for nine years, accepted the nomination and outlined her approach: “I believe no one serves alone on this board. We are seven, and it is our shared responsibility to do this work,” she said, adding that she values listening to differing perspectives in service of students and the community.

Carla Thompson was nominated and elected vice president and was sworn into that office during the same reorganization portion of the meeting. Thompson told colleagues she brings years of board experience and a commitment to moving “forward and doing the best we can do for our students.”

The board also administered the oath to newly elected member Naomi Coffin during the meeting. Dr. Wilson Turner, the district superintendent, delivered the superintendent’s report and highlighted recent end-of-year activities, including graduation: “We were happy to shake over 700 hands at graduation,” she said, and noted ongoing summer work on teacher evaluation processes and program planning.

The leadership changes followed the district’s reorganization procedures. The president and vice president will serve until the board’s next annual reorganization unless the board amends that schedule. The board adjourned at the conclusion of the meeting; its next regular meeting date was noted on the updated board topic schedule.

What’s next: With new leadership in place, Hoffman said she will work with Superintendent Turner on committee liaison assignments and on bringing planned evaluation recommendations and other informational items back to the board for discussion.
