Residents urge more tree planting and mark Parks & Recreation Month; council notes community events and storm-permit support

An audience member urged the city to prioritize tree planting on public property to reduce urban heat, improve air quality and support wildlife, citing recent extreme heat events as context for local action. Another resident, Galen Schwab, criticized what he described as limited city commemoration of the U.S. 250th anniversary, saying streets and monuments lacked flags and visible decoration.
The council recognized July as Parks and Recreation Month; a parks representative highlighted staff and seasonal employees, announced farmers markets that run through September and a summer festival (July 24–26 at Bicentennial Park) while a park is under construction. Holly (S9) also noted that the community shred event was relocated to the service department (6600 Cochran Road) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Solon residents only.
Administration noted storm-related issues: Planning Director Mister Iona said the city will post a stock letter residents can give to insurance companies explaining the city's 5% rule for siding and roofs and will make the letter available on the city website and social media to help residents get claim approvals.
Next steps: Administration will post the insurance assistance letter and provide the planning memo related to proposed charter amendments to the council and the Charter Review Commission.
