Cochran council approves $4,000 in emergency food donations to four nonprofits

The Cochran City Council unanimously approved Nov. 6 donations of $1,000 each to four local nonprofit organizations to support food distribution during a federal SNAP benefit interruption.
Councilwoman Carla Coley moved to allocate $1,000 to each of Faith Temple, First Baptist Church, Willing Hands and Cochran Cares from the General Fund contingency; Councilman Shane Savant seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Earlier in the discussion, Council Member Cody had proposed the same allocation.
City Attorney Jim Elliott advised the council that, under the Georgia Constitution, municipalities may provide funds for public health services and that nutrition falls within that scope; the council asked the City Manager to confirm each organization's 501(c)(3) status. Attorney Elliott will draft a simple contract between the City and each organization to ensure funds are used solely for food distribution.
The council recorded that funds would be allocated from the General Fund contingency and that the City Manager would verify nonprofit status for the newly formed Cochran Cares as well as the other organizations prior to disbursal.
