Suffield commission flags park safety work, algae treatment at Sunrise Park

The Suffield Conservation Commission received multiple park maintenance and safety updates for Sunrise Park at its June 23, 2026 meeting. Chairman Art Christian said a new dock, to be dedicated to former commission member Pat Reilly, has been built and is awaiting installation, and that the bridge leading to the swimming area will be replaced.

Parks Superintendent Chad Kuzontkoski reported that several trees had been assessed—some removed and others left under observation—and said the Fire Marshal established pavilion occupancy limits of approximately 70 seated and 200 standing, with signage to be installed. Kuzontkoski said pond algae treatment is scheduled for June 26, 2026, and recommended temporarily suspending swimming until the treatment is completed; he also noted the commission discussed the possibility of a second treatment and asked that notices be posted on the Town website to inform the public.

Kuzontkoski also reported that summer camp had begun, reviewed routine maintenance and mowing concerns at Stony Brook Park, and raised concerns about non-resident weekday use of Sunrise Park. Commissioners discussed options including hiring a floating weekday gate attendant and exploring an automated gate system for future implementation but took no formal action. He further noted a proposal from the Suffield High School Interact Club and the Rotary to install a Peace Pole at Sunrise Park; the commission asked for additional information before considering the proposal.

No votes were taken on park operations during the meeting. The commission thanked public works staff for assistance with the dock and bridge projects and asked staff to post safety and closure notices related to the algae treatment.
