The Iowa City Civil Service Commission on July 2 certified a hiring list that staff recommended for police officer openings after reviewing results from the most recent testing cycle.
Human Resources staff told the commission the latest recruitment produced 60 total applications, 12 participants in the written/post test, and 10 candidates who advanced to interviews. "That resulted in a recommendation that 5 of those individuals be placed on a certified hiring list," Human Resources staff said during the meeting.
The police chief and commissioners praised the Human Resources office for its flexible, rolling testing approach, which staff said helps retain candidates who might otherwise drop out under an annual testing schedule. Staff reported current sworn staffing was about 83 of an authorized 85 positions and said the rolling model has produced 27 interviews and 13 certified names across three cycles in the past 12 months.
Chair (speaker 1) called for a motion to certify the hiring list; a committee member moved and another member seconded. The commission approved the certification by voice vote, and the Chair declared the motion passed; no opposition was recorded in the hearing.
The meeting record does not list individual vote tallies. The commission took the action on the certified hiring list and moved on to a separate agenda item on promotional testing.
