Merrimac commission allows Lake Attitash phosphorus-removal system at Back River bridge

The Merrimac Conservation Commission on Aug. 25 issued a negative Determination allowing the Lake Attitash Association to install a phosphorus-removal system at 128 Bear Hill Road near the Back River bridge. The vote was recorded as 5-0; Mark Leger recused himself from discussion and the vote.
Representatives Christine Leger, Robert Desmaris and Veronicia Lake described the system as using activated carbon and magnesium oxide placed in bags strung across the river to collect phosphorus. They told the commission they will check the site once a month, remove the materials prior to rain events and send collected data to the commission for review.
The minutes record the commission’s approval as a negative Determination allowing the work to proceed. No conditions or monitoring protocol beyond the described monthly checks and pre-storm removal were recorded in the minutes.
