Police, fire and parks report activity; BPW notes water system issues

At the March 20 Holden City Council meeting, department heads delivered operational reports that outlined recent service activity, equipment updates and planned projects.
Police Chief Mayhew reported 31 incident reports, including 14 misdemeanors and six felonies, two warrant arrests, two juvenile incidents, 69 traffic summonses and 61 traffic warnings. He said codes had recorded 28 cases and one animal-at-large/license incident. Mayhew told the council that the department’s new radios are active and that grant paperwork for body armor and in-car cameras has been completed for reimbursement.
Fire Chief Wakeman reported 11 fire incidents and 17 rescue/EMS incidents and gave the department's average response time for all calls as 6 minutes, 53 seconds.
Street Superintendent Joe Robb summarized weekly maintenance, culvert installations and large-equipment work; he noted that new radios are installed in his department and that he is reviewing a new computer software program.
Park Director Tami Mallory said Stout Fencing has been chosen to install a concrete walking path and an ADA-accessible parking spot at the Coonhunters building, and said a basketball fence project and a handrail for new walking-trail steps remain in progress. She said one Park Board member has been inactive and that the Park Board will ask council to remove that member; the council later approved that removal and a subsequent appointment.
The Board of Public Works submitted minutes reporting several water main breaks and a tower telemetry-system failure that required manual water-level management until repairs were completed. Those operational notes preceded a council motion that the city's general fund not be used for maintenance of a pond built for the wastewater treatment facility; council members approved that direction.
Mayor Briscoe also announced local clean-up events (a city park clean-up March 22 and a Johnson County-wide clean-up April 12) and reminded residents that the April election will occur before the next council meeting.
