Lake Fest committee outlines carnival, street closures and parking plan for mid-June celebration

Parks Director Matt Denton introduced the Lake Fest committee at the Jan. 20 meeting and said this year marks a special year due to the U.S. 250th anniversary and the FIFA World Cup. Committee members Shauna Houghton and Sherry Coulter outlined logistics including a carnival with a Ferris wheel, revised parade routing intended to reduce congestion and safety risks, and plans for a car show at parade conclusion.
Houghton said the committee met with residents on Meadow Street and confirmed closures would preserve emergency and resident access; barriers will be movable for rapid clearing. Bridge Street and Main Street will also be closed during the event, and the three parking lots behind City Hall will be closed from June 14 through June 21, 2026. The Senior Center parking lot is planned for police parking; staff may close the Senior Center for the week. The committee is also discussing use of Church Street parking with Grace Community Church and potential trolley-service fundraising for the church youth group.
Chief Lockridge and staff will continue coordination on security and barricade sourcing; the committee noted barricades are being borrowed from the FFA and staff is pursuing military-grade barricades through Liberty. The Board recorded no public objections during this report.
