Board debates central-office salary approvals and a $15,000 social media position; motion to table salaries fails

The personnel section of the agenda prompted sustained discussion about oversight and process. Multiple board members asked why recommended salary increases had not been reviewed by the finance and facilities committee before appearing on the June 5 agenda.

A motion to table resolution C, which would have postponed approval of central-office appointments and salary figures until finance and facilities could review them at a June meeting, was made by a board member and seconded. The motion to table failed on roll call. Members who opposed tabling said the salaries were in the budget and the practice of approving summer hires between meetings is established; members who supported tabling said they had not seen percentage details and wanted finance input.

The agenda included $15,000 budgeted for a part-time social media specialist. Board members debated whether the function should remain a stand-alone, paid position or be absorbed into existing administrative communications duties. One board member noted the money is already in the adopted budget and recommended approving the appointment now with a commitment to review whether the role can be consolidated next year. Another called for personnel committee review of stipends and roles so the board can better understand return on investment.

During public comments earlier in the meeting, resident John Maguire criticized the district's fiscal transparency and asked that OPRA responses include the staff member's name.

The board recorded votes on the personnel slate with some No votes and abstentions on individual items, but no sweeping reversal of the staffing slate occurred that night.
