Board backs engineering work for full Dundee Road reconstruction to fix flooding

Smithville city staff told the Board of Aldermen on Jan. 20 that Dundee Road suffers recurring flooding during heavy rain because the corridor lacks curb and gutter and the roadway profile directs stormwater toward nearby homes. Assistant to the Public Works Director Mayra Toothman recommended full roadway reconstruction and regrading as a long-term solution; staff said simple curb-and-overlay work would not resolve drainage impacts and might worsen conditions for some properties.
Staff explained the revised estimated cost exceeds the original estimate, so they proposed advancing engineering and utility evaluation in the current year while deferring construction until adequate funding is secured. Board members agreed that a comprehensive fix that resolves the underlying drainage problem is preferable to a partial approach that could leave residents vulnerable to ongoing flooding.
The Board directed staff to proceed with engineering and utility assessments and to return with more detailed cost estimates and a funding plan before scheduling construction.
