City outlines phased move to 825 Tech Center Drive; electrical issues caused delay but no budget impact

Gahanna officials told council July 6 that the long-planned move to 825 Tech Center Drive will proceed in a phased schedule starting the week of July 27 and that operations will begin from the new facility in mid-August.
Senior Director Kevin Schultz said bulk items and records will be moved the week of July 27, furniture and staff workspaces will shift the following week, and the city plans to be operating out of the facility beginning the week of August 10, with a public dedication planned for about August 25. "We are full go," Schultz said, describing tours scheduled for council on July 21 and 23 and a boards-and-commissions visit on July 29.
Schultz attributed the summer delay to electrical issues the city deemed significant enough to fix before moving, citing both safety and reliability concerns for police and the communications center. "We made a strategic decision that we would not move until electrical issues were resolved," Schultz said, and added the remediation was handled at no cost to the city.
Mayor Chadwin said staff will continue to evaluate options for the vacated municipal parcels at 200 South Hamilton and Rocky Fork and expects discussion later this year once the move and CIP/budget processes progress.
Council members asked for more detail on the earlier electrical subcontractor problems; Schultz said the city has questioned the general contractor's accountability (an ongoing administrative issue) but that the delay has not impacted the project budget. The administration will follow up with council about the move-tour RSVPs and timing.
What happens next: council members will be invited to attend the scheduled July tours; operations are expected to begin in mid-August and the administration said a more comprehensive conversation about the disposition of 200 South Hamilton and related parcels will take place later this year.
