Commission discusses Riverside bridge funded by federal appropriation and local match needs

Commissioners and county engineering staff discussed a direct federal appropriation of $1,020,000 for a Riverside bridge project and what local costs the county may need to cover. County staff described the structure as a cast-in-place culvert that must be buried to protect substrate and fish habitat; "It's actually a cast in place culvert," an engineer said.

The commission noted the appropriation likely will not cover every possible bid scenario. "Let's just say the bridge comes in at, million 400,000. We're only getting 1,020,000," one commissioner asked; staff confirmed the county would need to identify additional funds if the final bid is higher. Commissioners discussed a memorandum of understanding with Riverside so the county can oversee the project while the city retains final ownership and administration of the work.

Why it matters: the appropriation is a one-time federal award that accelerates a long-discussed local project but may require local matching funds or additional county spending to complete the full scope.
