The St. Clair County Commission voted to approve a prorated contract of approximately $7,000 with ClearView, a facial-recognition provider, for tools the sheriff’s office said can compare surveillance images against a wider set of images (including social and news media) to help identify suspects.
During discussion the chair acknowledged privacy concerns while emphasizing law-enforcement utility: “I know that's an infringement on privacy, but it sure has helped catch a lot of criminals,” he said, and staff described the product as an upgrade from jail-booking-photo comparison to broader-image searching.
The motion to approve the contract passed after a second; commissioners noted the purchase is subject to county attorney review and will require a budget amendment. Supporters said the technology has helped locate wanted individuals, while at least one commissioner and staff noted it raises questions about oversight and data use.
The purchase was one of several contract approvals approved at the meeting (see separate summary of votes). The commission did not alter any county policy governing use of investigative tools at the meeting; staff said the county attorney would review contract language and privacy/usage provisions before final implementation.
